ACCESS TO CASTING DIRECTORS

Ask yourself: Why doesn’t SAG-AFTRA do more to connect our members with casting directors?

ISSUE: Our TV/Theatrical contract already mandates that casting directors participate in jointly sponsored showcases or spend a comparable amount of time doing general interviews with our members every month but it hasn’t been enforced in many years. If we did, thousands of our members would be meeting working casting directors for free every month. (Section 47(B) of the Theatrical CBA)

WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE:
Building relationships with casting directors and getting them familiarized with our work is one of the most important things actors can do. When it comes to communities of professional casting directors, we need look no further than the Casting Society of America (CSA).

WHAT IS OUR SOLUTION:
We intend to resume enforcement of that contract provision so our members can have free access to working casting directors.

In addition, the CSA’s Artist Development Committee approached the LA Local in 2019 with a desire to teach craft, audition, and business classes at our LA Conservatory. The opportunity for our members to work with and learn from the top casting directors in the business is of undeniable value and MembershipFirst intends to work with the CSA to establish that program.
